What GAP is and what it’s all about
GAP — is a child of Woodstock and the Age of Aquarius, flesh of the flesh of the hippie subculture. In 1969 in San Francisco, Donald Fisher and his wife Doris took the savings they had been putting aside for their son’s college, and used them to buy a batch of jeans Levi Strauss & Co. The ad said that the Fishers were selling “four tons of jeans” at low prices. The Fishers started selling them alongside music records, band posters, and similar merchandise. They chose the timing well, so the jeans and vinyl sold like hot cakes.
At Doris’s suggestion, they decided to call the store “Generation Gap,” but over time it was shortened to simply “Gap.”
The hippies were soon followed by the yuppies, and the Fishers joined the new trend. In 1974 GAP gained popularity in the USA, actively using advertising promotion. The GAP store chain also began retailing other brands besides Levi Strauss.
In addition, cleverly exploiting a loophole in the law, the Fishers lured customers away from Levi’s by lowering prices below the “official” ones. This contributed to the brand’s success, but eventually hurt the brand’s finances.
The Fishers decided to bring in an outside CEO, and their choice fell on Millard Drexler. It was he who took GAP to new heights. But to do that, the entire GAP concept in the USA had to be shaken up.
To begin with, the brand almost completely abandoned retailing, keeping for itself only Levi`s jeans (in time, GAP would part ways with them as well). But the range of GAP’s own products expanded significantly. Even more important was the shift in focus from cheaper polyester to natural, high-quality cotton.
GAP offered (and still offers) its customers a wide color range, much wider than that of its competitors. Drexler threw out most of the hangers and replaced them with wide display tables, where he began laying out the clothes.
Over time, the excellent quality of its jeans, T-shirts, shirts, and knitwear won the brand nationwide popularity. Now almost every American has printed hoodies, T-shirts, or jeans from this brand in their closet. GAP’s fame spread beyond America’s borders.

GAP and GAP Factory — what’s the difference?
