Obey is the only clothing brand that evokes street art. It’s like Supreme, but more artistic (and less expensive). Young people in major U.S. cities adore it. Obey T-shirts, hats, and hoodies can often be seen at gatherings of New York skaters — or, especially, among street art fans. The brand has no gloss or air of “elitism,” no huge retail spaces; it is simply its own special subculture.
The reason is that the creator and inspiration behind the brand, Shepard Fairey, is a famous street artist, activist, and illustrator. The creator of many famous graphic designs — for example, the Mozilla logo, Barack Obama’s campaign portrait, and album covers for Black Eyed Peas. That is why Obey clothing is, rather, a means of self-expression, an opportunity to show your artistic “self.”

The history of the Obey brand
Fairey's career began in 1989. He created a sticker with the face of wrestler Andre Roussimoff, better known as Andre the Giant. He suffered from gigantism, his height reached 225 cm, and his weight was 230 kg. But Andre managed to turn this into an advantage: he performed as a professional wrestler, fought matches, and eventually even appeared in films (the most famous being “The Princess Bride”). His distinctive face became recognizable across the country.
Fairey made a batch of stickers with Andre the Giant, added the signature word OBEY (“Obey!”), and began putting them up on the streets, watching the public's reaction. All of this became the beginning of the brand: people started talking about the distinctive image, and it began to be noticed in street artist circles. Several of Shepard's acquaintances, who did not know who was behind the campaign, even attached the Giant OBEY sticker to their baseball caps and T-shirts. That was when Fairey got the idea of using this symbol to promote a clothing brand.
As a result, in 2001 clothing, in addition to stickers, posters, and graffiti, became for Shepard another canvas, another way of expressing his ideas. Unique patterns and very distinctive elements quickly made it recognizable among the creative crowd.
Shepard's talent for drawing and creating symbols that resonate has today made him one of the richest street artists in the world. His fortune is estimated at $15 mln. For someone who started by putting up stickers with a wrestler's face, that's really not bad at all.
What Obey clothing is known for
Graphic, interesting, and unusual designs made the brand popular on their own, even without any investment from Shepard Fairey. Its distinctive and vivid style, inspired by different cultures, found a strong response among American urban youth. Today, buying an Obey T-shirt is prestigious and fashionable. At the same time, Obey has no stores; almost all sales are made online or through partners.
The company’s own website is Obey Clothing. However, by default, if it sees that you are from CIS countries, it redirects you to the European version. Prices there are European, in euros, and a good 15% higher. To get to the American version (ObeyClothing.com), you need to have an American VPN. Canada will work too. We recommend using the Hoxx or HotSpot browser extensions; they are free. And they will also come in handy for many other American websites.
In the store, you can buy Obey T-shirts, hoodies, dresses, jackets, and beanies. The selection is not very large, but that is the whole point. Each item contains a unique print designed personally by Shepard Fairey, so there simply cannot physically be hundreds of different products here.
The brand also constantly does collaborations. One of the most famous was their collaboration with Levi's, which resulted in several models of new and interesting jeans. In 2013, it presented a collection together with the rock band Suicidal Tendencies. And a little later that same year, items created with Cope 2, the legendary graffiti artist from the Bronx, were released. In Russia, the brand is also quickly gaining popularity, especially among fans of urban street fashion.
A distinctive feature of Obey clothing is that it is produced only in America. It is made by workers with good wages, not by semi-slaves in poor Asian countries. Therefore, the quality of the products here is much higher than even that of many world-famous brands. This is clearly noticeable in the cut and the fabric. But the prices, accordingly, are not the lowest either.
