OldNavy — is a trademark owned by the GAP corporation. Under its umbrella, the company's most affordable products are sold, several thousand different items for women, men, and children. The quality here is much higher than that of Chinese/Turkish knockoffs, the designs — more interesting, and the prices often turn out to be even lower than in China. Especially if you buy OldNavy products on the official website at discounts (which are always real here).
The History of Old Navy
GAP has been one of the most famous and popular clothing manufacturers in the USA since 1969. The company has 3,5 thousand stores across the country and beyond. To somehow compete with this, in 1990 Dayton-Hudson Corporation (which owns such brands as Mervyn's, Dayton's, Hudson's, and Target) decided to create a new division and develop it as a less expensive alternative to GAP clothing. It was called Everyday Hero.
But GAP's head at the time, Millard Drexler, decided not to give his competitors a single chance. In 1993, he opened the Gap Warehouse outlet for discounted items, where the company's best-value products began to be sold. Subsequently, on March 11, 1994, Gap Warehouse was renamed Old Navy Clothing so that it could be developed as a separate unique brand. That is how Old Navy clothing appeared.
The first stores of the new brand opened in California. They were significantly larger than the old Gap Warehouse “warehouses”: 1400 m2 instead of 900 m2. They were deliberately created in a supermarket style. With metal shelves, concrete floors, rows, and carts that you could push in front of you. There were even small items by the checkout that encouraged impulse purchases: T-shirts, underwear, socks. Overall, people here could buy goods for several months ahead at once. And not spend a fortune.
At the same time, clothing for GAP and for Old Navy is sewn in the same factories. That is, the quality there and there is equally high. And prices at Old Navy are much lower, sometimes two times lower. Thanks to this, the Old Navy brand grew at an incredible pace. In 1997, it became the first retailer in the world to surpass $1 billion in sales in the first 4 years of the business's existence. And by 2000, it had already opened 500 stores. In 2001, the Old Navy online store also appeared, providing additional revenue growth. Today, most of the brand's sales are made through it.
Now there are 1106 company stores open in the States. Among them there are also gigantic ones — for example, the area of the main Old Navy store in San Francisco is 5,6 thousand (!) square meters. The brand is in the country's top 5 alongside H&M, Carters, Chicco, and Gap. Every second family in the USA dresses at Old Navy. And the brand's revenue has reached $4 billion a year.
Assortment and price range of OldNavy.com
The store is especially famous for its sweaters, jeans, jackets, dresses, and T-shirts. More expensive items can be found at GAP. Old Navy prices are always 30-40% lower. Besides, discounts are held here regularly. At which the additional savings reach 65%.
Old Navy is a mono-brand. In the Old Navy online store you will not find any third-party items; only the company’s own products are sold here, with their own unique design and high manufacturing quality. This is not 6PM and not Amazon, where you can find absolutely anything. You either like the refined style of Old Navy, or you do not (and then you shop on another website).
The assortment is designed for any age. There are currently eleven main categories on the official Old Navy website:
- New Arrivals — models from the freshest collections;
- Women — women’s clothing;
- Women's Plus — plus-size women’s clothing;
- Maternity — clothing for pregnant women;
- Men — men’s clothing;
- Girls — clothing for teenage girls;
- Boys — clothing for teenage boys;
- Toddler — items for preschool-age girls and boys;
- Baby — clothes and shoes for newborns;
- Jeans — denim items;
- Masks — a new category, protective masks with unique designs for adults and children (cost $9,50-$12,50).
Mostly, Old Navy T-shirts can be found for $15-$20, and with discounts — even cheaper. Good sweaters are sold here for $35-$45. This is less than 3300 rubles (and, again, there are discounts). At the same time, the quality is much higher than that of similar products in Russian stores.
Examples of Old Navy clothing
Waterproof Go-H20 jacket for $45 (3400 rubles). Plus an additional -25% is offered in the cart (temporary store promotion). Available in three colors. A jacket like this from Old Navy in Russia would sell for at least 7 thousand.
Beautiful T-shirts for girls cost $6 (470 rubles), while in Russia similar ones in quality (cotton, neat design, good cut) cost more than a thousand. In general, Old Navy children's clothing is considered very выгодной, including because prices for children's items in the Russian Federation are usually greatly inflated.
Special insulated pants for a small child (for both a boy and a girl). In four colors, with sizes for ages from 12 months to 5 years. Thanks to the discount they cost $7 (about 540 rubles). In Russia, such warm quality little pants cannot be found for less than 1-1.5 thousand rubles.
